Be Smart. Be Good to You!

Some days you need to goof off. Hang up the old To-Do List, and binge watch your favorite show (Hello Murdoch Mysteries and Midsomer Murders!). Last week coming down with a bad cold forced me to spend four straight days of doing nothing. I'd been kidding myself before. My version of "taking a break" really meant I just switched to doing things other than writing my novel for hours. Then I got sick. All I wanted to do was lie down. The first day I tried to push through. I managed to get work done (revisions to DEAD WRONG on two chapters instead of five). Then I wisely realized that it just wasn't going to happen.

Four days of lying in bed, eating cherry throat lozenges and sneezing. Drinking lemon juice and honey in hot water at night (works for coughing and sore throats). Eating homemade chicken veggie soup.

When I got back to writing, all was clear. I realized that the reason doing the revisions had seemed so tough was because I needed rest. I'd been marketing my writing, doing blog posts, Facebook posts, tweeting, and more. Oh, and did I mention that I pushed to finish the first draft of my next book before flying off to Morocco for three weeks?

Had a blast, but it was action-packed. I came back and "rested" a day or so. Then jumped back into revisions. And got sick. Yes, I really needed to finish my novel so I could get it into the hands of my Advance Readers team. But. There are times when knowing when to quit is smart. Learned a lesson I thought I'd learned well. Sometimes not working is good for business. Oh, and it's healthy and good common sense!
